Because of the war effort's need for brass, the US produced steel cents in 1943.
I had this listed on eBay and it was taken down before the listing went live because it was eBay's concern that someone would "use it to make a weapon".....Hmmm.
Anyway- this 37mm shell is from an M3 Anti-Tank Gun. These guns were highly effective and used widely until 1943 when modifications on German Tanks redered the gun less effective and the military switched to 57mm shells. The gun itself was hauled by a Jeep making it highly mobile.
The shell is dated 1943, the last year of it's widespread use. For those of you who don't know, cents from 1944 through 1946 were minted from melted ammo casings like this one.
Just a fun and (slighly) coin related item that I thought I'd see if anyone had an interest in.
