Thanks for the welcome Brad! :D

Just wondering, are you sure that's a small S? From what I've read and understand, the large S is a "naked eye" variety. In my set I have several examples of the 1928 large and small S varieties. Please correct me if I'm wrong, these are two of the examples I have.....side by side:

Hey Thad,

"Naked Eye" variety? meaning no loupe required or is there something else I'm missing?

Thanks,
Lestrrr

There is a difference. It is very minute but with the careful eye one can tell the difference. I was pondering the first pictre of the 28 S being the Small S but you did clarify the difference. Nice BU Coins with a Large and Small MM.

I still think those are both Small S. I'm not sure why one appears to be slightly bigger than the other. The Large S is A LOT bigger than the small, and has a totally different shape. I wish I had a BU example to share.

Using the pictures on this website, I have to agree. The MM style is not correct if the LCR pictures are. When I hold this coin next to the other the MM looks huge. Does anyone have the specs on the sizes of MM's? I see read lots of information on styles, but not size specs. It would add some science to it.

I think this picture shows what I'm seeing pretty well. It may help to look at the whole coin.

Thanks for the discussion! Exactly why I joined here, to learn and share. :)

The pictures on LCR are most certainly correct. You can also check CONECA's Variety Vista site, you'll see the same thing: the large and small S varieties is due to a change in font, one regularly being much larger.

I agree from what has been said your pics of the two coins you have are differing in size but appear to be the same font. Maybe this is just due to differing pressure when the mintmarks were punched...one may have been deeply punched and the other lightly?

Can you zoom in and take very clear pics of just the MMs?

These are old pictures for insurance purposes, the coins are in my bank deposit box with the rest of my main collection. On my next trip perhaps I'll pull these out for better/closer pictures.....for now, this is all I have.
