    Where to find acetone?

Where can I buy acetone? Also, does it take care or vertegris and are there any safety precautions to take when using it?

You can get it at Lowes or probably any general hardware store. Just make sure you are getting pure acetone and not mixed like nail-polish remover. Use in a ventilated area. No, it won't remove verdigris, but it will get rid of dirt, glue, and assorted other gunks. It is safe to use on your copper cents.

Home depot, lowes, any hardware store. Always use gloves when handling chemicals. I found out the hard way that I'm allergic to kerosene after I tried to wash my hands in it after painting a roof. It won't take care of verdigris (that's what VerdiCare was created for), but it will clean off organic material.

      Edit: Will beat me.

I've found acetone to work very well, but you may want to use verdi care afterwards to preserve the coin. Also, acetone doesnt seem to get verdigris off well like Verdi Care.

Please read the Caution on the label very carefully when using it for cleaning and use it outdoor always.

You can also find it at Wal Mart near the painting supplies.

Thanks, I've been trying to explain to my wife that it's just the acetone.

The biggest risk with acetone is the potential for a flash fire. It evaporates quickly and the vapors are highly flammable. It's a naturally occurring substance, and is even produced by the body. You'd basically have to inhale repeatedly directly from the can in order to see any serious irritation, and/or ingest so much of it that it would be quite obvious you were trying to do yourself in. Due to its high rate of evaporation, it can quickly dry out skin, but it's not harmful per se to have it contact your skin. So just be careful of fire, but don't worry; you don't have to use a hasmat suit with the stuff.

My other pastime is writing a Rum blog... When distilling spirits the alcohol that boils off the mash in the beginning and the end are not good. Not good in flavor or for your health. Acetone is a big part of the beginnings of a Rum spirit run... That is the point where the threat of a still explosion is highest. It is the part that could make you blind as well... Powerful stuff
