Forum: Terminology

The proper way to describe what we see and mean to say.

  1. Sticky Thread Sticky: Acronym/Abbreviation List
A big thanks to our forum member willbrooks aka Will for spearheading this project and all of the hard work it took to make this list possible. http://www.lincolncentforum.com/acronyms/

  2. Sticky Thread Sticky: Welcome to the coin terminology discussions
A few thoughts on creating a list of terminology for the forum: Is everyone aware of the FAQ menu link and considered the list there as a starting point? Some words, concepts, phrases and acronyms might not be open to discussion or interpretation. They are what they are. An image(s) can be added to illustrate the term being explained. A list of misconceptions and un-excepted descriptors should be created, such as Mother/Daughter as...

  1. glossary update
First, I would like to thank Jon for spending time in between fencing his vertical yard and making Lincoln cent backhoe ballast to go through the glossary and make a list of suggested edits. Surprisingly, many of his suggestions aren't complete garbage. So, thank you. I will definitely be looking to add and update photos. I'm hoping you guys will pitch in help with that. Even our anti-nazi banned friend has agreed to help me with this, so...

  2. Definition of Trails updated.
The definition for "Trails" has been updated in the glossary. It now reads as follows: Trail Die: Generally speaking, trails are parallel raised ridges which extend away from the corners of a coin’s design elements. They are strongest at the point where the device meets the field, and then taper off as they extend into the field. They vary in strength from naked-eye obvious to barely perceptible under magnification. A single coin can...

  3. New Glossary Entries
I added the following entries to our glossary. Thanks to all who contribute. Floating Roof: When a die is over-polished, the devices are often reduced in size, or in extreme cases, completely removed from the die. A Floating Roof is the name given when parts of the memorial building are polished away, making it appear the roof is floating in mid-air. See also Abraded Die, and No FG. 4. My woody
lolol..Now that I got your attention. Not sure if this would go here for terminology but just found this "Woody" I love these things. Not much of a premium if at all but I love them!. I have a couple pages in an album devoted to these and toners. Whats the correct terminology? Something to do with the alloy?

  5. Hardy Index System added to Glossary
Thank you to JC for his work writing this entry. With all of the recent interest in die breaks, I think this makes a fine entry. I also made a few other edits in the glossary that I had been meaning to do, but if there is something I told you I would do and have forgotten, please remind me. Thanks. JC, let me know if I made any contextual errors in the entry during the editing process. Thank you. Hardy Index System: A schematic...

  6. Spent Father's day listing some new entries.
Having an eggnog and listing some new entries! Here are the new entries I put in today. Thanks to Jerry, Josh, Mike, and Tracey for photos, and to all those who gave their input. Bezel: A (usually) metal holder used in jewelry to hold a disc-shaped object such as a coin or medallion. These often will cause permanent damage to the rim of the coin when tightened down around the coin. When these coins are released from their bezels,...

  7. Possible new Glossary Listing R-Dated
R-Dated In the book “THE CLASSIFICATION AND VALUE OF ERRORS ON THE LINCOLN CENT” by Jean Cohen there is a section with listings for “R-DATED” Lincoln Cents. The image below is an example and could be the 57D-R64, missing the (sp) diecrack right wheat to rim.

  8. Another glossary term added
Surprised I didn't think of this one sooner, as it is a well-used term among cent collectors. Thanks again to Larry for providing the photos. Atheist Cent: A colloquial term for a cent with a cud which covers the word God in the motto. Photos courtesy of forum member Joel. I know I was supposed to add another term too, but I can't remember what it was now. Old age starting to set in, I guess. :(

  9. 2 more glossary additions
Thanks to new member Liz for posting this interesting coin and for allowing use of her photos. Rippled Coin: This is a form of post-strike damage that causes a doubling (or multiple) effect on the devices. Just as the name suggests, the coin exhibits ripples on its surface, often following the contours of the devices giving them a doubled/tripled/quadrupled appearance. The exact cause(s) are unknown, but contact with an acidic substance...

  10. 3 New Glossary additions!
Thanks to discussions and threads involving 2Old, Onecent1909, Roller, Maineman750, and Mike Diamond, we have 3 new entries for our glossary! Thanks guys for all of your input! PDS System: The PDS System is a highly structured cataloging system for mint varieties and errors. It was originally compiled by Alan Herbert in 1971. PDS stands for the three main divisions of the minting process: “planchet,” “die” and “striking.” Two more...

  11. Railroad Rim
I think this is a good example for Will to add to our Terminology section.

  12. Couple of new glossary additions.
I added Keith's flying D photo to that entry and I also added 2 new entries: Pareidolia: The phenomenon where people see patterns or objects in otherwise random data. People often “see” extra design elements that aren’t really there in a coin’s damaged areas, plating blisters, stains, etc. ...and... Grease Mold Doubling (Stiff Die Fill Raised Design Element Doubling): error-ref.com‘s term for a recently discovered form of doubling...

  13. New Glossary additions
Due to recent discussions, I have added 2 new terms to the glossary. Thank you to Rollem for suggesting the entry "relief," and to Roller, Wapa, and Jfines69 for their added discussion. Relief: In numismatics, relief refers to the difference between the high and low points in the coin’s design elements. However, when preceded by the word “in,” as in “the anomaly is in releif,” it usually means raised. Also being added is Tapered...

  14. A very nice example of a Tapered Planchet.
This is a 1955 Cent struck on a Tapered Planchet. It weighs 2.62 grams instead of the normal 3.11 grams. Note the thin areas on the edge with missing design elements and rim.

  15. The glossary is up!
I am excited to introduce to you the Lincoln Cent Glossary on which I have been working for many months. My goal was to create a glossary focused specifically on the Lincoln Cent. I feel this resource will be an educational tool for both the beginner and seasoned collector. It is not only a collective of information in itself, but also a launching pad to other great on-line resources for the Lincoln Cent. I would like to thank...

  16. Photos needed
I am looking for photographs to illustrate the following entries for the LCR glossary. If anyone has photos of these, or has a specimen that could be photographed for a particular entry, and is willing to donate the photos, please PM me, or post it here in the thread. Examples of Lincoln cents preferred over other denominations. Thank you! Texas Cent : A cent that has been hammered between pieces of (usually) leather, creating a cent...

  17. acronym/abbreviation list
Ok, we got to a point where we thought this was ready to post. The list can be seen here: http://www.lincolncentresource.net/forums/showthread.php?p=231504#post231504 We added about 60 new entries. We also eliminated about 15 entries, mostly because they were not Lincoln cent related. Some other entries were changed or edited. (I realize CUD and BIE are neither acronyms nor abbreviations, but I put them in anyway because they may be easily...

  18. Mission statement.
Before we begin any discussion about terms and acronyms, I feel it is critical to first discuss what the mission is with this project and why are we considering doing it in the first place. LCR currently has no glossary of its own and the existing acronym list, while a good base, needs some revision, additions, and possibly eliminations. I feel strongly that we should have our own glossary. We still have the option to link to our sister sites...

  19. The terminology process
In a recent thread found here we started a discussion on proper terminology that we all can be in agreement on so that when a new post or thread is created everyone is clear on what the original poster (OP) is trying to show us. Will stepped up to the plate and offered to spearhead the mission by compiling a list that will be open for discussion as needed. I'd like Will to begin these threads and give us something to consider when he is...
