Sometimes, the very fact that the coin is dinged up would result in a different sound when dropped.
I get that from some quarters I find as well. They nearly mimic perfectly the sound of a silver quarter when dropped.

A lamination problem internally can also change the sound. I use it to identify microscopic problems in wood for soundboards and instrument parts when woodworking.

You report a weight that is almost 1 gram heavier than normal. A typo, perhaps?
Yes, it was supposed to be 4.96. Sorry about that. I don't know how I managed to do that.
