I am working on a project on preserving all my coins in a different way. This will take up more space than a normal 2x2 but would be better informative of the coins. So my biggest question is what kind of plastic is in the 2x2s and can I get sheets of that type of plastic??? I'll share photos of the project when done and thank you for your time and answers.
Probably Mylar.
In the long term plastic tubes are the safest long term storage, the coins are tight and not much air or air flow and no paper or staples in the mix.
Sometimes flips are ok, I've seen cents that were in flips that look great after decades but I've also seen ones where the paper discolored or the Mylar had a pinhole that caused a toning spot or they got scraped by staples. Cheap folders ruin the coins over long term, some people love Dansco folders or the plexiglass things with a sandwich with holes in the center layer but it's a pain to open and close and the coins rotate. Bottom line, I've never seen a great solution for sets or better than a box of slabs.
