Jason, the photos are great, as usual. Looking at photo #4, it appears that the doubled ear is not particularly that well defined. its as though, if someone were searching rather rapidly or just glancing at this coin and in a different light, it could be easily passed up. What was your impression when looking at it in hand?

I felt it was possible if the light was coming from the wrong direction that it could be, and probably has, been overlooked. And that was a good question Rock, thanks for asking...

Thanks JC for giving us more information on the find.
It's just a remarkable find and to have a piece of history in your hands must have just blown you away.

Great article by John Wexler in the July 18th Issue of Coin World and also on Billy's 1987 DDO in his Monthly Column on Varieties. CONGRATS to both on nice finds.

The ear appears to have moderate doubling. In my amateur experience, I would say, it is a DDO. But I am not an authority to say it is. This one of a kind find needs the attention of experts now.

Just saw Ken Potter's article in the August 9, 2011, edition of Numismatic News and it has been listed as FS-101 in the Cherrypickers' Guide. Interestingly, he takes the view that it is a class VIII doubled die because it only affects the ear.

Ken's article will be in the next Erroscope too. It can be found here for now:
