1983 counterclash (the big one) CLO-001

Here is the first example of CLO-001 (or CCL(T2)-1c-1983-01) I have seen in person. Picked it up at the ANA show. Listed in the CPG as FS-401 (FS-035.3)

I agree with the hypothesis that the broken part of the die from the reverse (the CUD) was probably struck by the obverse die 3 times (or at least in 3 locations). First was squarely on IBER; this is where the initial impression was taken. There is as an arc of die damage west of the I (black arrows), consistent with the curvature of a Lincoln cent, supporting the idea it was part of the broken die. The metal with the first impression shifted southeast, and at this point, both transferred IBER back to the obverse die offset from the first, as well as took a second impression of IBER, also offset. There was shift and the final impression of a now doubled IBER was sunk in above the date. If you look closely you can see IBER is doubled, with the B being clearest.

    This is an incredible coin.

    Thanks Chris.

I should add that he die was abraded heavily. The abrasion seems to be pre-counterclash. I am detecting a strong conventional clash or double clash entirely separate and earlier.

Congratulations on adding this rare counterclash to your collection. I'm sure it didn't come cheap. One day I hope to have the same opportunity. Here's a bit more information on this and several other Type II counterclashes: http://www.coinworld.com/articles/ne...-cent-only-si/
