Steve, I'm pretty sure that what you're referring to as an RPM is actually the broken mintmark punch that's mentioned in this thread several times. Actual RPMs for 1979-D are quite rare (not to suggest they have a high value, the demand is very low too).

sorry to bother you, but this certain variety that your picture shows is actually a d over a rotated cw d, north. You will notice the almost horizontal position of the D under the final D, which gives the top D the puffiness towards the north.
Let me know your opinion but I do have lots of varieties of 79 d, including triples and inverted, horizontals etc.

The broken punch from 1979 is well known.
You are however welcome, to START A NEW THREAD per supposed RPM and share your evidence in the Variety Attribution section. I would be surprised to see of a unheard of inverted or horizontal RPM from 1979, and so I await your illustrations to erase my skepticism.
