    Unanswered: 1989 interesting looking date

    I wasn't quite sure which forum to post this under, so I just guessed. LOL. Anyway, I just thought I would share this. I thought it is pretty cool.

    Must have been a die abrasion training day at the mint The trainer did the lite abrasions then let the trainee try it OOOPS a little heavy on the pressure Should have gone under Collectors Q and A which I shall move it to!!!

    These are heavy die scratches. Here is another example.


    Die Scratch: Small scratches in the die can occur by either accidental means, or by purposeful abrasion of the die by the mint. They might do this intentionally to try to remove die clash marks or other die damage. These die scratches are unique to each die and are therefore useful as markers for identifying a particular die. Since scratches are incuse on the die, they appear as thin raised lines on the coins.
