1989 P Extreme Die Deterioration or environmental damage?

I know there is a lot of zinc rot going on here but the devises are extremely skewed. Is this environmental or just a really worn die?

Based on the other damage, I am inclined to believe this is all PSD. It may have taken some heat from a torch, or some corrosive to distort the letters like that. In this case, I do not believe die deterioration is a culprit although it may have a little bit before the damage.
