    2018D with anomaly

Here is a 2018D Lincoln Cent obverse. It has peculiar flow patterns near the rim. What caused this?

I've seen scratches like these on other Shield cents, going in different directions. I believe it's from die polishing, let's see what the others think.

Are you referring to the teeth like notches or the flow lines?

I'm referring to the distortion of the initials and the teeth-like extensions under the jacket.

Teeth like notches like I described.... Yes that is very odd looking.

Is the area under the initials incuse or raised in relief?
There does appear to be one rectangular shaped die chip under the lapel between the bust and rim.

The area around the initials is raised (lumpy).
The tooth-like anomalies (3) are slightly raised.

Those square looking notches at the bottom of the bust could be from a die clash. Do you see any other indications of a die clash?

Looks like all die wear to me... The area at the VDB is really worn down... Compare it to an earlier die state 2018, or any shield, and there will be a rather large gap between the bottom of the letters and the field area... Not sure when the design changed but on older LCs the VDB is nearly perpendicular to the field on the bottom lip of the jacket then the design changed creating an area nearly parallel to the field for the VDB... The other areas are at or next to the folds in the jacket where it meets the field... That is the lowest area in the jacket and wears away rather quickly creating the dentical look... Hope that helps a little!!!

Cool Jim, thank you! I've never seen or heard of the dentical look at the lower vest!
