Big coin, moderate disappointment...

Picked up on the 'bay for $31. I saw a FaceBook post earlier with the same date/mint with a substantial die crack, so I checked mine.


After scanning the reverse, I saw something I know I didn't like. So I took some pics with the AmScope...and I'm nearly positive I'm seeing what appears to be small burn marks. The linear orientation and position suggests to me some form of pin was soldered to this at one time. Looks like they got it as best they could however; looked like toning spots on the listing pics.


Caveat Emptor.

I would say you are correct on the pin idea. Probably would not grade because of this if you were going to send in.

Still a nice coin to have in your collection Frank, even if you are not able to send it back. It does look like little burn marks like you said from trying to solder it to a piece of jewelry or a pin. Since you have been on the hunt for these, what are your chances of finding an upgrade?

Pretty good, Viv...eventually. I've been doing a little bit of sales on YouTube (of all places, but it works!), and silver is always hot.

Were it a $100 or more purchase, I would for sure pursue returning it. Things as they are, a bit more hassle than I have the motivation for

Nice pick Frank even with the marks... Is that one on the chest of Lady Liberty also??? Did you notice how the profile of Lady Liberty looks a lot like Ben Franklin He did get into some strange stuff when in Paris
