    1968D MM mystery

While going through a bunch of 1968Ds, I came across this coin [see pics] with a MM that looks like it was precisely sliced off as if with a razor blade. It is practically flat but raised just enough to easily see the clean outline of the 'D'.

Has anyone ever come across this before?

    What would have caused this?

Sorry, the coin is quite shiny -- I just took some quick pics with a cellphone and loupe at an angle.

    Thanks,

The edge of the vest looks weird too, like it's flattened. Is there a raised area SW of the MM? It looks like the MM is sitting in a low spot. Am seeing it right?

I would normally say grease filled die but I think it's a concaved coin. Just my two Lincolns.

Maybe the MM area is pretty much clogged with grease or even what could become a dropped letter if it falls out of the D it's clogging filling it in almost level with the center post.

I am thinking along the lines that the mint mark punching was weak. A partially filled die is also a possibility as mentioned.

It is a special coin... A really nice looking 68D... Looks like it may also be a slightly off center strike???
