The overlay of the area north of the 19 onto the canyon It is just a curiosity of how close in size the 2 actually are and if it could possibly be the metal from the area near the rim that is north of the 19... No big deal... I just thought it would be cool to see!!!

Oh okay, thanks Jim! Sure I can do that to see if they match up, cool idea!

Jim, you are much better at overlays than I am. I gave it a try and the two areas are close to the same size, just a little different shape. My thoughts are that the area just above the 9 is the lam still intact and the other part near the rim is from when the lam fell off and it caused a little gash in the metal. What do you think? Here's the overlay
Edit: but.. now that I think more about it, it could be the lam fell off and reattached itself to the coin and has somehow stayed stuck LOL... very good observation on your part. You are welcome to do an overlay of this if you'd like to!
Thank you TPring! Well I don't know really but if it's the same piece that fell off that flipped itself back onto the coin and stuck there, that would be pretty amazing. Let's see what Jim thinks

Sorry for the delay in getting the overlay posted... I used arrows to point out the areas I attempted to align the large chunk over the date to the canyon near the rim... What I see is different from what others see (pair of doilies ) I flipped and reversed the image of the chunk to fit with where I believe it is from... To me it looks as if the piece may have broken loose just after the strike and has somehow remained attached all this time... If the piece was dislodged prior to the strike I would expect to see some deformation on the rev opposite of the canyon??? There also appears to be a minor separation line running across the numbers... Hope the overlay is ok!!!
