Hi all..I am new to coin hunting & metal detecting. I found this ..umm...specimen & not sure what to do w/ it. Do I leave it in it's state? Or do I try & clean it up & if so, how? Copper Specimen.jpg
Welcome to the Lincoln Cent Forum, my name is Dan. Are you sure it's even a coin? It's to far gone to be worth anything if it is,you can try soaking it in acetone. ..................dinkyblue
Can you post another image with something (a quarter?) next to it for size reference? If it isn't a coin you might try Brasso or a copper cleaning liquid or something to dissolve the minerals on the surface.
And it does look like a copper dinosaur egg! I almost want to leave it the way it is. Ha -Is it common to come across chunks of copper when metal detecting?! (bear w/ me please..I am noob when it comes to metals)
I'm glad you asked for a size comparison because it gave me a reason to show off this Roosevelt dime I found 2 days ago in a CoinStar! It's my first silver coin find.
Those are great pics! I am thinking it is probably a piece of melted copper. You can attempt to remove the patina, but I would be tempted to leave it as is. It is a great conversation piece.

I moved your thread to the Off Topic Discussion forum... We like to keep non Lincoln related items in this forum... I'm with Bob... Leave it as is... Makes it a very interesting conversation piece especially with the red color in it... Nice find on the 51 dime!!!

(A.K.A. Elmer Fudd) Be verwy verwy quiet... I'm hunting coins!!! Good Hunting!!!
Okay, thanks. Sorry, this is only my second post. I figured I was safe in General Discussion. I apologize for the dime post as well. I have to remind myself that this is the Lincoln Cent Forum & not the Coin Forum. I was just super excited about my dime find, cause I haven't had any luck w/ pennies yet. -But thank you for taking the time respond to my question. Much appreciated!
