Answered: 1989P is it Die Wear or from abrading the die, or both?
Found this 89P that shows remnants of a reverse die clash and abrasions on the obverse that is leaving no trace of a die clash behind.
Were the letters of USA affected by both die wear and die abrasion? The FG was affected too, but One Cent looks normal so I'm leaning more toward die abrasion but I've never seen that affect the letters this much.
I think you got it right with abrasion being the culprit on these. There is a lot of proof on this coin but some are not so subtle.
Thank you Bob for looking at this! I'm used to seeing abrasion thinning the letters but not so much to seeing the letters distorted like this. I was beginning to think it was a die wear, die abrasion, grease filled die and maybe something else going on too! Thank you so much for helping us learn and for making this hobby easier to understand!
I let this post get away from me Viv!! Nice pics! Yeah, that's a good one, looks like the mint worker used a Dremel tool that day! That's exactly what polished Morgan dollars look like at the base of the letters. I tried to find a close up pic but could not.

Thank you Jon! That's cool that Morgan letters look this way too when affected by die abrasion!

Sorry, I didn't explain that very well, I meant PSD. People will polish them to either cover up really bad damage and scratches or to try and make them look like "Proofs" or "Proof Like". This was a lesson I learned the hard way on the bay. When they polish them, it will create the same affect at the base of the letters.

Okay gotcha! Thanks Jon! Guess when people try to mess with Morgans to make them prettier... they mess them up huh?
Yes Sir Jim, a pretty nice die clash was eradicated I think
