    FS-25-1957D-501

I'd like to apologize for creating the thread about the 1909 reverses so quickly. I left right after for vacation and have been so busy since returning I haven't had a chance to do any research on the hypothesis. I hope to study that sometime soon.

I have had a chance to pick Ebay a bit though and am pretty excited about this one. While not a Lincoln, I liken it to 1959D-1MM-021 (http://www.coppercoins.com/lincoln/d...&die_state=mds). It is also a widely spaced, misplaced mint mark, and has some controversy surrounding it's authenticity.

It is a CPG variety and is recognized by Wexler. However, CONECA considers it die damage. The coin had some nail polish on IGWT when I found it listed as a normal 1957-D quarter, so I submitted an offer based on the red polish and got it for $8 shipped. Luckily, acetone removed the red easily, with no damage left underneath. It's a pretty nice example of FS-25-1957D-501, and may also be a later die state of 1957D-WRPM-002, but I can't confirm it beyond a shadow of doubt. Wexler doesn't have enough images of the markers, or a wide enough view for mint mark placement. http://doubleddie.com/1237745.html.

Nice to see you back Jay! There's plenty of time to continue your research and let us know what you find! Meanwhile, this is an awesome ebay pick! Congrats! What a cool story of how it turned out so well after the fingernail polish came off and you have a very nice RPM and an example of the controversial misplaced D!

Really nice pick... I do not know why that would be a controversial RPM??? That is clearly a D shape mark... Not only that but the CC RPM you pointed to looks nothing like yours... There are numerous RPMs listed that are no where close in appearance to what is on your coin... As for being a later die state of Wexlers 002 http://doubleddie.com/1237745.html I do not think it is... I zoomed in on yours until it was as close to the same size as Wexlers MM image and yours appears to far west and south from the stem... Also the splits in your serifs do not appear to be in the same location and angle... A clearer and lighter pic would help with that tho... I can not see the lower split all that well!!!

    Excellent score!
The controversy is the extra wide placed "D mintmark " supposedly exists on more than one die.
I pulled three or four of these from an unc. roll years ago. They are in a whole box of quarter varieties that is hiding from me. When I lay hands on them I'll post some pics to compare die's.

So sad ... My reverse consumption engine was a broken fuel gauge ... gonna look at coins now. John

Well , no answering the controversy today. Mine look to be the same die as yours Jay. A later die state though.

I'm with Jim on that looking like an extra Denver MM.
Odd, but John's MM looks even more definitive, even tho it is a later die state.

Cool... I can see the spilts on your MM much better and to me they look to be in a different location and angle than Wexlers 002 http://doubleddie.com/1237745.html ??? Yours also looks to far west and south??? Thanks for an excellent comparison coin!!!

One of the highest graded 1957-D on PCGS is an unattributed example of the same die I think. I'll find it again and post a link in a bit.

Thanks all for looking and discussing. Sorry I haven't been back sooner.
