Answered: !988 D . And this is...?
I have seen a couple of Lincolns exhibiting this on top of a few letters in UNITED. I don't know how to call it; but you surely do. Can you please, let me know how is this called and why this deformation appears? They are all depressions in the surface of the coin and that's what baffles me... If they were raised, I could think of some kind of MD; but since they aren't I can't find an explanation.
Thanks.

That die deterioration doubling. Here's a couple of links to the glossary on this forum.

Problem is they aren't raised on top of where the letters are thin, but they are incuse... Die deterioration doubling anyway?? In that case, I would expect them to be raised... I'm probably wrong though.
Thanks

Here is another picture (upside down) using an external light source instead of that of the USB microscope, so you can observe it better (I guess).

And here is another one upside down with the microscope's own light source.

I know it is due to a deteriorated die and I may have missused the term Die Deterioration Doubling but I don't think so. Hopefully someone with much more knowledge than me will explain exactly what type of deterioration it is. Hang tight and someone will post.

Thanks Viv! I've come a long way since I thought I had a 1989 RDV-005! I did find a 1988P 006 yesterday.
