I'm not a pro at these, but I did find the size requirement to be considered an IDB, it's 4 square millimeters or more. Anything smaller is considered to be a die chip. Here is the cuds-on-coins.com (look below "Free Standing") link
Your find is interesting and you can email it to JC and see what he says! My thinking is the top portion above EPU might be a retained interior die break and below EPU looks more like a die chip, or if big enough... could classify as an IDB. Let us know if you need help with how to email to JC.

The mint got their moneys worth out of that die Looks like most of Abe is gone also... On your crack/chip it may be an RIDB??? The pic is a little to blurry for me to tell for sure but it looks as if the NE edge of the B in EPU has shifted N???

Very cool looking crack and break!! I like how the crack follows the shape of the "S". I've noticed the 88's are about as bad as the 83's when it came to the mint getting all the use out of a die.
