    Unanswered: 2018 D Error?

So I just went through three rolls of 2018 D pennies. I found at least four of these pennies. In the right field is what looks like a raised area in the field. I couldn't feel it with my fingernail though. Tomorrow I may try putting the coin on a high angle and try snapping a few picks. What do you guys think?

    First, compare them together.

If some are exactly the same, have an identical raised bump in the same spot then it's probably some sort of die damage.

If they have slightly different bumps then it's probably different random plating issues.

If it's very similar and incuse it could have been something stuck to the die.

That should answer it, from the pics I can't tell if it's raised, incuse or stained.

Hi emodx...is there something on the reverse that might make that shape? To me, it's just a bubble.

    I'm thinking it's a die dent.

so all coins are from the same roll. Al coins have the same feature in the same spot. If it were wash staining I’m not sure how it would collect in the same spot on multiple coins. I’ll have to set up a rig to determine raised or incuse. I really can’t feel anything.

    Aisha,
The reverse is without anything out of the ordinary.

I have never heard of that. I’ll have to research that.

So some other clues so to speak. All three rolls are from the same box. All rolls have hairlines near the rim with diminished luster on the hairlines.

    So along with that thought.

If they're some die defect or even something stuck to a die those hairlines should match.

Try verifying what you see is exactly the same.

Coins can have plating bubbles but they won't be exactly the same.

Sometimes stains can be the same, I've found oil stains in exactly the same spot maybe from oily spots on a die.

Is it only the pic or does the coin have some toning or staining?

Cool looking... Do the other coins have the ridge ring??? The die looks to be a VLDS... A full rev pic would also help... To me it looks a lot like die damage... It does appear to be in relief but I can't tell for sure... Hopefully you can get a setup to show an angled look at the anomaly... Did you try using a tooth pick to check if it is incuse/relief???
