    The virtues of Acetone

I have been so busy this summer traveling and surfing and its not going to stop anytime soon. Sometime back in June, I was given the very rare opportunity to purchase the lowest graded 1909 VDB Matte Proof at PR 61 R&B. (Only 420 minted) Well, I did the unthinkable and cracked it out and gave it a nice acetone bath. I do believe it deserves a slightly better grade despite the obvious large carbon spot. The coin was originally in a PR 63 R&B ANACS holder back in 2000. The new owner crossed it over to PCGS who graded in PR 61 R&B in the days when even getting a MS 65 RED cent out of PCGS was a real accomplishment. I will know at the end of the month if I made any kind of a mistake. I posted before acetone and after acetone pictures to show you what a little bath can do.

    Enjoy

    WS

It did lighten it up but the second spot by the date seems a little more noticeable. Hope that is just the lighting.
Look at all that detail. All the wheats seeds are fully separated. Congrats of the coin and your summer plans.

    Neat MPL.

The acetone helped it, I might try getting it back in a slab as it is.

The problem for me is that now that it's raw, it would be hard to resist trying some verdi-care or something on the spot, I think it would reduce it, not 100% cure it.... But the risk is too big that the TPGs won't like it and a PCGS PF61 is still a "problem free" coin, I would be afraid to lose that virtue so I would probably have kept it in the PCGS PF61 slab.

That is a nice coin... Looks to me like there was some sort of film on it and the bath removed it... I would think a 61 for sure but a 63 may be hard with the carbon spots???

That took guts I like it. Just wondering why you didn't send it in under their restoration? You know it won't get BB and maybe a bump up in grade. Just curious.
