    1928S Large MM Study

Yesterday, I went to the Long Beach Coin Expo. I picked up a roll of 1928S circulated Lincoln Wheat Cents. There are no known DDOs or DDRs for that date (and as expected, I didn't find any in this roll). There are only 4 known RPMs, but I didn't find any of those either.

However, I also searched for Large Dates versus Small Dates. When the coins are circulated, it is sometimes difficult to determine if they are Large Dates due to wear. I may have found 9 examples of Large Dates. Have a look, and see if you agree if any (or all) of these are Large Dates...

    b 1928S LD b.jpg

    c 1928S LD c.jpg

    d 1928S LD d.jpg

    e 1928S LD e.jpg

    f 1928S LD f.jpg

    g 1928S LD g.jpg

    h 1928S LD h.jpg

    i 1928S LD i.jpg

Assuming these are true Large Dates, then 18% of my roll were Large Dates. Does anyone know what the real numbers for Large Dates versus Small Dates actually is?

    Thanks for looking...

Here is a little info but looks to only be best guess based on graded finds.

I collect these as well. My notes from a Lincoln book said it was about 3%.

I checked yours against VVs MM styles http://varietyvista.com/01b%20LC%20D...k%20Styles.htm MMS-002 = Small and common, MMS-003 = Large and Scarce... Your first coin I am not to sure but it appears to be a MMS-002 as well as coins 2,3 and 4... Coins 5 thru 9 look to be MMS-003 (Large)... All of your coins appear to be different dies (I just did a quick look at that)... I looked at the shape of the insides of the upper and lower loops as well as the arcs depth on the upper and lower serifs where they connect with the outsides of the loops... Always good to have other eyes confirm any findings... Especially since you may have 5 scarce MMSs... Maybe send Bob (mustbebob) a PM to come check also??? Hope that helps a bit!!!

They are less common than the small S but from my searching I think they are not as rare as books say.
I don't cherry every large S that I see in dealers flips or on ebay even though they have an FS number but if I see a higher grade large S then I might go for it.

It's hard the tell with wear. I often found some definite smalls and some definite large and some hard to call.
On the small S the center section is only as wide as the curves and sort of a constant width for the entire shape, on the large S the center section is wide and the curves get thin at the top and bottom centers.

For those of you who are reading this learning about the hobby, there is no such thing as a 1928 large date or small date. They are referring to the mint mark.
