1909S-VDB reported but Ebay has done nothing
I ran into this in my ongoing search for an example. I reported it yesterday and Ebay has done nothing. This example is ludicrous and at $355 now. Why would Ebay not look at the report? Just trying to save someone like myself.

Jay, I brought this member from another forum, VAMworld (silver dollars). He has some sort of special contact with eBay and gets things taken down quickly. I don't know if he comes on here enough to check PM's but you can go to his profile and email him. If he can, he will help. Link to profile (http://www.lincolncentforum.com/foru...5835-djf-coins)

Look at that funny date, the pointed top 1, big 9s and big 0. Obvious fake.

Definitely a bad fake.
For what ever it is worth I sent an email to the seller with a link to the PCGS web site so they could see what a real one looks like.
The seller only has one sale the past year (a beer label?) so I started off by suggesting since he does't sell many he might not be familiar with the number style used and suggested he do the right thing and cancel the auction. Lets see if he replies or cancels the auction.

It's a shame you can't contact the bidders and warn them.

Ha, also has the phony die chip on the left wheat stock.
Nineteen watchers too.

Yes it does have the same die chip as the well known fakes.
It also has some issue on the reverse where the rim is doubled so the high point is not at the outward edge. (like ex encased) but it's not ex encased, just plain old fake.
An identical fake with that funny pointed 1 is used as figure 1 in this ebay guide about fake 1909-S VDBs.

The B of VDB has a straight center bar instead of the angled bar also... Hard to believe that ebay would let it continue??? 15 bids and at $365.00 with 20 watchers!!!

He did reply to my email. He plans on passing it along, evidently with no remorse for extra expenses incurred by the winner.
Here is the email exchange:

"Dear brewmaster53,
Evening, I see you don't sell many coins so you might not be aware that this is not a genuine 1909s VDB. It is a fake.
The shape (font) of the numbers for the date on genuine coins were not like the yours. Here is a link to a real one on the PCGS web site.
http://www.pcgscoinfacts.com/Coin/Detail/2427
Just copy and paste into a new page to see the style of numbers used in 1909.
I'm just trying to save you and the buyer the aggravation and hassle of going through with the transaction only to have to return it.
I hope you will do the right thing and cancel this auction. Petespockets55

Dear petespockets55,
I purchased this coin some years back at a coin show as an authentic coin, I've never had it graded, but if somebody buys it and has it graded and finds out that is not an original coin I have no problem with refunding money but as far as I know, it is an original, I'm not an expert but I have a pretty good size coin collection and I have dabbled with coin collecting for several years. As far as this coin goes, it looks like in average 1909-s VDB coin to me so, but like I said, if the buyer has a problem with it, I always except returns.

Thanks for replying but did you look at the PCGS site? Or even the Ebay page for spotting fakes. Your coin is there.
Nobody likes losing $ but passing it along is not the right thing to do. Just because the original dealer/seller was wrong in selling it doesn't make it right to sell it again.
It is disappointing you plan on letting the auction play out instead of doing the right thing.
All kinds of analogies come to mind but I'm surprised someone, like yourself, that considers themselves an aficionado and professional at brewing wouldn't have more respect for other hobbies/professions.
How would you feel if you bought 50 pounds of hops for brewing that was advertised as, lets say, authentic imported German which turned out to be weeds when you received them. In effect this is what you are doing with this counterfeit.
Do the right thing and cancel the auction. (And best of success to you with your brewing whichever route you take.)

Edit: His reply, (A "Shultzy", from Hogans Hero's, reply: "I know Nothink")-
"Brewmaster....,
Like I said, I'm not convinced it's a fake, and if whoever buys it is not happy with it I offer a 100% money back on this item, if you're not interested in it don't bid"
Oh well.

That individual, most likely, did not even look at the PCGS info nor has anyone bidding on the coin... Unfortunately ebay can not or will not police the folks selling on their site... About the only way to get ebay to change the way they handle this stuff is hit them in the pocket book... If enough people quit buying thru ebay they wouldn't be getting their fees... Then they would become concerned!!!
