    1944-D DDO-001 FS-101 Stage D in PCGS MS67RD!!!

    Additional Information
    Date: 1944
    Variety: DDO
    Mint: Denver
    Coneca: DDO-001
    Wexler: WDDO-001
    FS#: FS-101
    Coppercoins: 1DO-001

Here's a really nice 1944-D FS-101 DDO-001 somewhere betwee Stage C and Stage D (VLDS). PCGS puts this one at MS67RD, and currently only 3 examples are graded MS66RD as the current top pop. I hope to send this back to PCGS for the variety designation so I can sell this coin. It was cherried by me for $53, and actually looks much nicer than the seller's photos in hand.

    Nice pick.
Do you know of a place to see pics or cross refs of FS numbered coins that aren't in any of the book editions yet?

Fantastic pick!! Top pop and everything, congrats!! Only one even listed on eBay that's actually slabbed by a TPG and it's only MS63 brown.

I found the NGC MS63 you referred to, and it does appear to be correctly attributed (https://www.ebay.com/itm/1944-D-FS-1...lAAAOSw0blbc1C~). That is actually a big issue with this variety, as there are at least 3 different dies that look nearly identical with slight differences in MM position. One even has prominent die cracks in the hair similar to DDO-001 Stage C and D. Check out the photos below. These are the only 3 coins graded by PCGS as this variety which have been photographed through photograde. Only one of them is actually the DDO-001/FS-101 though.

    http://images.pcgs.com/CoinFacts/330...882774_max.jpg - AU55BN - Wrong

    http://images.pcgs.com/CoinFacts/333...704788_max.jpg - AU50BN - Correct for Stage D

PCGS seems to be keying off the 9 on their coin attributions. They should be using mint mark position first, followed by strength of the doubling on the second 4, then markers. I know that at least 2 of the 3 in MS66RD should be correct as I sent them to PCGS myself lol. The biggest issue of course is that the CPG never should have put a die so similar to others in the guide. Just by virtue of its easy confusion, it is clearly not special enough for a "best of" type of coin book.

Thanks Bob! Search imaging is definitely my method. I can't always explain 100% why something I see is a variety or not, but usually I can tell pretty quick with the ebay photos whether something is worth looking hard at or moving on.

    Ed,

As far as I know the best source for FS numbers is Variety Vista. James Wiles received advanced warning what the new varieties in the CPG would be before the book was published. My assumption is if the editors decide to add a 7th edition, he will be the first to know again.

The only time I know of Wiles being incorrect is with 1984-D. The CPG states that the FS-101 is CONECA's DDO-001. However, the photos actually match DDO-002. As such John Shields and myself did a very in depth study of this year and concluded the following should be used as a guide, with a total of 6 listed DDOs and 2 DDRs.

    1984-D DDO-1 WDDO-1 1DO-2
    1984-D DDO-2 CDDO-1 FS-39 FS-101
EDS - die scratches bay 3 and 9
MEDS - die scratches and die dots left of GOD, has die flow line SE from 9 above MM as seen in Cherrypickers guide
MDS - die dots left of GOD and die gouge right of Y of LIBERTY
LDS – die gouge right of Y of LIBERTY and die gouge bay 9
    1984-D WDDO-2 1DO-5
    1984-D 1DO-1
    1984-D 1DO-3
    1984-D 1DO-4
    1984-D DDR-1 WDDR-1 1DR-1
    1984-D 1DR-2

The biggest issue is of course that PCGS seems to list both DDO-001 and DDO-002 as FS-101.

I know this is not unusual but they should be ashamed of themselves for not doing any better than that! The mm location is not even close. This is a fantastic pick for sure though, they show the MS64 at $225 and I know there is a huge jump at MS65 so I cannot imagine what your 67 will come in at! Once again, congrats!!

Unfortunately to me as much of the blame rests on the CPG as with PCGS. If they are going to provide a guide for varieties then 1. You should be able to attribute that variety from the photos provided, and 2. Your cross-reference to CONECA should be correct.

Personally I don't know if the 1984-D should be using DDO-001 as the FS variety since it is what the guide SAYS is FS-101, or whether PCGS should be using DDO-002 as the FS variety since it is what the guide SHOWS is FS-101 with their crappy photos.
