Got my old 1984 Suburban back from the paint shop today.

Its been in the shop for the last 6 months so being down to one car plus the hassle of not having my truck to toss surfboards inside has been a real challenge this summer.

This is its second time being painted. I bought it used with 150,000 miles on it in 1996. There are not too many original parts as even the interior has been replaced twice since I have owned it. So when people ask me how many miles does it have, I can say the body has 375,000 miles. It was not cheap but as my neighbor told me if I did not like the estimate for what it was going to cost to paint it I could always stop by the Chevy dealer and ask them what a new one cost...

I assume the block and drive train is original? Depends on what the renovation cost. But, ultimately, it is what you think it is worth doing. Nice paint job and interior.

That's a GOOD ride and the paint job looks great!! Hah, you could park a couple of hybrids in the back of that thing!!

How many times have you had to replace the split dashboard?

Nice looking Suburban.

I had a 79 Blazer in the same colors.

They are pretty simple compared to the new ones, even more basic if you go back a few more years before they had smog pumps and cats and that stuff. It's nice to open a hood and see 2 radiator hoses, 2 heater hoses, 8 plug wires and a coil wire a battery and a few cables. On the modern ones you open the hood and see spaghetti of wire and plastic things. With all of the electronics the new ones won't be getting restored much, they work great for a while but when old there's too much to deal with and a gazillion sensors to imagine problems.

Thanks for your comments. Whole drive train has been replaced once after what was many rebuilds. Stuff just becomes not rebuildable after so many miles. But a brand new GM engine is still $1500 delivered. Seems that will be the next thing to change out next year. Why throw good money at an old truck ??? New ones do not get much better gas mileage, and can not do what this one does. I can put 2 kayaks on top, and 2 inside. Half dozen surf boards - no problem. Seat 9 people comfortably - can do. Full size 4 X 8 foot bed for hauling sheet rock or whatever, let alone, a good place for wifey and I to sleep on cross country trips. Amazingly, none of this can be done with a new $65,000 Suburban. If you attend the FUN coin show in Orlando this year, It will be in the parking lot.
