1984D (RPM or Plating)
I think this just might be a plating issue. It is rather deceiving, especially with a loupe.
What do you think?

I have the toughest time with zincoln RPM's but I would have to say plating and whatever it is that causes what looks like a shadow. I wonder if someone will give us some insite on that too, the shadow thing.

Cool looking... Looks like plating to me also... If it were a RPM the punch would have been completely deformed... The area in the MM would be the vertical bar but the lower horizontal bar would have been complete out of alignment... It would have started nearly at the tip of the lower serif making the MM squished considerably... The shadow area is the zinc... It is open to the air and has accumulated some contamination, such as skin oils, and has darkened... Much like a woodie does!!!

Maybe almost everything we see there started out as a tiny tear in the plating.
