Well guys, I think the reason I was having a hard time getting a closeup pic of the crack, was it wasn't a crack! It looks to be a plating disturbance of some sort. It's actually all around the head.

What's weird though, is I just now noticed an actual crack a little lower in the middle of the head.

Well I'll be Jon, I see the plating blisters now! And I think I see the die crack you are talking about, just below where the plating blisters are but more south and east!

Yes, that is it! I am surprised that strong die crack is not part of a spike!!! Great job on the photos of that very shiny 1983, I know they are hard to get!!!

Thanks for checking it out Viv!! It's crazy that on the full pic it looked so much like a crack! This one was a really tough coin for some reason. One thing I learned a long time ago about taking pics of coins, they are much like people, every one is different and they are very different as to how well they photograph. I've had proofs that I got a fantastic pic of and dull coins I could not get in focus to save my life which both goes against the norm. I think if someone had the perfect answer, they would be multi millionaires!! There are some though, such as Ray, John and many others here actually, that have definitely learned how to someone harness the power of picture taking!! I think much has to do with a controlled environment, time, decent equipment and lots and lots of experience! Some things I don't know if you can really teach, maybe just lead a little and they either figure it out on don't.

Nice follow up pics Jon... Guess what - I still see the crack that I described earlier... Looks like the crack is on top of the bubbles??? Unless my pair of doilies are home from the cleaners
