Jim, just a few days ago, my Dell laptop would start to boot up and then kept going into shut down mode. I thought it was a goner My son was able to boot it to the BIOS and it was overheating, going into Hibernation mode and shutting off. I noticed it was feeling warm lately and I hadn't been using the Logitech cooling pad (with fan). He downloaded CCleaner and Speccy and now I can open Speccy and see how hot it's running. I am bad about getting sidetracked and walking away to do something, and leaving the laptop on. I also keep the USB Logitech cooling pad running all the time now, so far so good! Speccy is free... I don't know much about it but it shows a list of everything on your computer and I guess if the motherboard is bad it would say so??

I checked all that... I dismantled and cleaned it out to make sure... My other computer keeps shutting down after about 40 minutes depending on what I am trying to do... I ended up tracking down an old toshiba laptop I repaired several years ago... Got it up and running but it is slower than me Thought I had donated this one out... Good thing I didn't

LOL, 3 and 3.5 were one of the first ones that everyone used. It was pretty good.

The main issue with running anything XP or earlier is that most new browsers will not load with it. If not for that I liked XP more than the new memory hogging ones with bloatware features.

Laptops often have heat problems, vac out the fan grates and keep em propped up not flat and never use them laying on a bed so they get some airflow. Most are a pain to open and even if you open most of the time you won't easily get to clean the fan.

Almost learned the hard way how hot they can get laying on a bed, the blanket blocking the air circulation and cooling.

Did that when I first used a laptop and it felt hot enough to almost catch fire by the time I realized my mistake.

I pull all the components off the board and chassis then blow out the dust... I even pull the cpu since these days they are mounted directly to the fan for the radiator system (just like a car )... Got to be careful when blowing out the fan tho - First time I cleaned on I forgot about holding the blades and did an over speed - destroyed the micro bearings made all kinds of weird noises when I started it up
