Don't know if this would be a different variety but it's interesting. Column 10 goes below the floor, also the floors in the first two bays (as well as bay 10) are all sunken. Any observations?
Nice pics but don't see anything unusual, Lou. It pixelates when I blow it up too much. That being said, the obverse and reverse are highly abraded, the obverse has some plating issues and looks like a nice crack in the head. The reverse may have some clash showing through but most of what you are seeing are just vertical die scratches, I used to think there were doubled columns here too. Very common on the 88's.
I didn't see that at first. Thanks for the extra pic Lou. It is either a die crack as mentioned, or might even be a sliver of metal shaved off of somewhere close by. Don't know if I have ever seen a die crack in that location, but in this case, that very well may be what it is. Lots of wear and abrasion on that thing!

The last image with the three arrows seems to show an incuse area around the column base and raised next to the planter.
(The shadows are on opposite sides and I'm thinking you have two light sources, which make it difficult to tell if it is die damage of some sort or PMD in addition to the die crack.)
In hand it appears incuse below and to the right and then raised next to the planter. I'm using a Celestron scope and that's my only light source. To me it's very interesting how the base of the column is so well defined as opposed to all the others.
