    1974 S RPM

    Additional Information
    Date: 1974
    Variety: RPM
    Mint: San Francisco

There is only one of this date listed, and I think this could be the one. Please have a look and confirm my suspicion .........................dinkyblue

I think it's a "yes" Dan! Lower split looks good, mint mark positioning looks good, die flow lines look good, can't say for 100% sure on the die gouge at the face but it's probably right on! Hope I'm right and you are too! Congrats!

I thought there is a lot of die ware and it's hard to see any markers, but as you stated die flow lines look good, the split on the bottom of the mint mark and the position look right even though the MM took a hit. Thank you for your attribution..................Dan

You are welcome Dan! Let's see what the guys think, but I believe you are right. How bizarre that this is the only listed RPM for 1974S small date.

Nice find Dan... The MM position looks good as does the split in the lower serif... The circ wear on the date/mm makes it a little difficult tho... Can you try getting the abrasions around the date and MM a little better??? Also the chip on the rev looks close but I think the abrasions around the finials on the roof may be a better way to match due to the circ wear??? Don't forget there is a doubled MM punch on the 74Ss also http://varietyvista.com/Doubled%20Mi...f%201974-S.htm so we need to look at that!!!

Here are a couple of photos, this is as good as it going to get for some reason there is a lot of distortion on this coin, had to use a sharpening tool to get it clearer..................................Dan

Nice close ups Dan! Jim... I was just re-reading Dr. Wiles info on this and I didn't see any information on the RPMP having a split in the lower serif at any stage. Did I miss it?

Here is Dr. Wiles article http://varietyvista.com/Doubled%20Mi...f%201974-S.htm

and here is a close up of the MMS-009 Doubled Mint Mark Punch (scroll down some) http://varietyvista.com/01b%20LC%20D...k%20Styles.htm

Ray and I just published an article about this in the November Coin World monthly. No, the defective punch does not exhibit this split in the lower serif. This does look like coppercoin's 1mm-001, which I confirmed in the article as a legitimate RPM. Nice find. The other variety listings do not list this variety. I was thinking about sending my example in to Wiles along with the article, but I'm too lazy.

Thank you for confirming this 1974 S sd RPM 1MM-001. You might recall on 07/14/2017 I posted three 1974S coins, I thought at that time one of them was an RPM and I sent them in to be looked at. Turned out none of them were RPMs, here are the pic's. Number one is the RPMP, also I was wondering what the rarity on these are.................Dan

Thank you very much Will for confirming this and also for your Coin World article along with Ray's great photography! I remember the article, but could not remember the detail on the lower serif having a split or not! Congrats Dan, fourth time is your lucky charm!
