    Answered: 1974 D strike through on reverse

    You can see it through the pillars on the Lincoln Memorial Building with the beard to the right and his jacket to the left.

    These are remnants from a die clash. The dies came together without a planchet in between and left an impression of each design on the other. It's one of the more common mint errors you'll come across.

    If that is so how do the lines from the obverse go behind the pillars of the reverse?

    Because that happens to the surface of the dies. If there were incuse lines on top of the pillars it would be a sign of PSD.
