1988 P what appears to be an overworked die leaving something interesting behind

Wow, the Es lower horizontal is impressive.
I'm thinking it's all from die deterioration/die wear.
Notice the tops of the P and U have a similar pattern and we know that's (top of the P) not from a doubled die so I'm thinking it's all from the same cause.
