    Just don't forget... [advice]

Forgot and left this soaking in acetone for a bit too long [couple of days].

Was a very nice, circulated 43-S -- Just junk now.

Looks like the residue from soaking in the acetone dried on the coin.
I haven't seen this happen before.

I did have some mint grease dissolve in the solution once that affected the color/mint luster on some BU red coins when I forgot to rinse it off after soaking. Argh!

Have you tried xylene or solvent with a sonic jewelry cleaner to remove the residue?

I may have some xylene, but no sonic cleaner -- How 'bout a Sonicare toothbrush?

That residue is solidly on the surface of the coin. Like fine grit sandpaper.

Make sure the acetone is pure. The ladies like perfume and other crap added. The only thing that is suppose to be in it is the fed required "onion smell' to prevent kids from drinking the stuff.

I feel your pain. I ruined a fairly high grade, 1928 Large S, when I forgot about it soaking. I have not even tried to do anything with it.

Ouch, and a Cherry Picker variety to boot.

edit: well, maybe not a CP variety but at least an FS variety

ALWAYS well seal your container when using solvents so they don't evaporate and redeposit the junk. If you really want to try to bring it back, I suggest a diluted vinegar soak for an hour. Rinse well with tap water then soak in distilled water for a couple of hours after.
