Inheritance in Indiana

Hello All,

My father had a fairly large collection which he left to me. I have tried (out of respect of him) to hold on to the collection as long as possible.
But, I've been through hard times and tried to sell some. It seems to me that you never get what they are worth.
I have sold the larger more exspensive parts of the collection. But have gotten down to several rows of lincoln head cents and wheat pennies, plus lots of error coins in good condition. And some Buffalo nickles.
I was wondering if it would be worth my time to have them graded? And if I could afford it? Or would it be better to just sell the entire thing for a lump sum? I think indivdually what I have left is worth $10,000.00 or more but If I had someone come and take the whole thing away I'd be lucky to get $1000.00?
Any thoughts?

Welcome to LCR.

As far as selling coins, the market is very difficult right now and I believe that only the best and rarer coins are going to sell at fair prices. One thing you can do is take some of the coins to a coin dealer and ask if they know the value. If they want to buy any of the coins you need to keep in mind that they will not give you full value.
I would not have any of the coins graded at the slabbing companies as it would add to your out of pocket expense and you may not be able to recoup your costs.
Can you give us some idea of what you have remaining that you want to sell?

Have you gone to different sites on the internet that specialize in the coins you hope to sell and compared prices and such?

Others on this forum will likely jump in and have other ideas that may be of help.

Welcome to the club, Jean is right. Having them slabbed is indeed both expensive and time consuming. If the person has nothing but resale on their mind you might get 50% of the value tops,if you're lucky. True collectors collect because its what they have a passion for. This would be where your market would be most advantagous.. You have come to the right place.

Jean is right. Do some research. Find someone with a rescent Gray Sheet. Mind you these are only best guesstames from the websites. Depending on condition of your coins. Check websites: http://www.coinbug.com/default.aspx

Welcome to the forum. With the good advice already given, I would suggest holding out (as long as possible) and hope the economy improves so the coins sell higher and also making sure they go individually. Good luck!
