Greetings, and here is my latest contest. Identify the following classes of hub doubling from the 14 examples illustrated (12 Lincoln DDOs, 1 Lincoln DDR and 1 Jefferson DDO). There are hybrids, but try and identify the primary class (or both if you can). If you are extra sassy try and guess the date and DDO #...

To make it easier, you will find: Class I (X3); Class II (X3); Class III (X1); Class IV (X2); Class V (X2); Class VI (X1); Class VIII (X2)

Jason:
You are amazing. Your dedication to this site and the hobby in general, MUST be commended. So many of us, have been "educated" by this dedication.
Where you get the time and energy to do this can only be an act of Love to this hobby. We are very lucky indeed, to have the opportunity to share in your posts on LCR
Heidi and I are very grateful for this:
God bless us, everyone.

Good contest! However, you got one mistake. You have the roman numeral wrong when you mention how many of each class there are:

"To make it easier, you will find: Class I (X3); Class II (X3); Class III (X1); Class VI (X2); Class V (X2); Class VI (X1); Class VIII (X2)"

Wendell

P.S. I think I'll check for the die numbers before I post, as I recognize most of these.

From the guy who said that he may not have time to photograph his new 1971 S DDO!

I am going to stay out of this one. Good Luck everyone!

It would be terribly unfair for me to enter this contest also, but I do want to wish all participants the best of luck. I really think this is a great educational tool as well as an awesome contest.

hi:
like bob i am not in this contest - way above my brain level - i would need to visit the "Forbidden Planet Krel brain enhancer" to have any chance of winning!

Gonna take a random guess here, but it's pretty much a shot in the dark since I barely know my Doubled Die classes....

I'll guess that...

#1 is Class II

#2 is Class I ---

#3 is a Class II+V hybrid ----

#4 is a Class IV -----

#5 is Class I ----

#6 is a Class I (1971P-1DO-002) ---

#7 is Class V

#8 is Class III+VI Hybrid ----

#9 is Class V ------

#10 is class VIII -----

#11 is class VIII

#12 is class II (1971S-DO-001) -----

#13 is class VI ------

#14 is class IV

(subject to editing before the contest ends if I do a little more research... :LOL_Hair:)

Let's get some more guesses in here. Understanding the classes of hub doubling will help anyone looking for them as the pattern will help to know what to look for beyond just doubling...

When does the contest end? I'll try to get a few friends to join LCR and give a guess maybe... :LOL_Hair:

Maybe another week. I am more concerned with some guesses than a specific deadline...

Frank, I said the same thing to myself. It's not about looking like a fool. To me it's a learning experience. JC put a lot of time in preparing this lesson. Thanks JC.

Frank, you meant to say "bow" right? hahahaha!
I'm one to sit back too but you have a lot to offer us too Frank, but I understand how you feel.
For the other members, to get one right means you've learned SOMETHING. There's nothing to be embarrassed about. Certainly "I" have a lot to learn and had nothing to lose in guessing.

I need to close this soon - can I get a few more guesses first?

I will have to explain my rational for the shots I chose and how I feel they relate to the classes of doubling...

01 DDR: 1964 DDR-020 (FS-027) Class II - around the rim doubling (an EDS example).

02 DDO: 1972D DDO-002 Class I - doubling shows evenly on all outside devices.

03 DDO: 1971S DDO-002 Class V - doubling around motto, stronger in one area (LIBERTY) and gradually weakens toward date. Some files have it as a hybrid of Class II and V due to the doubling in LIBERTY.

04 DDO: 1942 DDO-002 (1DO-005) Class IV - off-set southwest; doubling that is consistently in one direction; often shows doubling of devices in the middle of the design as opposed to just outside devices.

05 DDO: 2006 DDO-003 (1DO-017) Class IV and VIII - mostly Class IV but still appears tilted (Class VIII) and confined to the left upper half of the design.

06 DDO: 1972 DDO-003 Class I - rotated and shows on all outside devices.

07 DDO: 1960D DDO-002 Class I - a deceptive DDO with no notching and a light spread in the date (LD).

08 DDO: 1960 Pr DDO-003 Class III - large over small date

09 DDO: 1966 DDO-001 Class V - pivoted doubling, notice there is no doubling in LIBERTY indicating a pivot point near the rim at K7

10 DDO: 1960 DDO-006 Class VIII - tilted hub doubling (and slightly rotated Class I or V) only shows in IN G and the T of TRUST.

11 DDO:2006 DDO Class VIII (IX) - tilted single squeeze hub doubling.

12 DDO: 1971S DDO-001 Class II - a very strong Class II that is similar to DDO-002 (compare and contrast them).

13 DDO: 1934D DDO-001 Class VI - classic Class VI extra thickness

14 DDO: Jefferson nickel Class II - doubling and notching towards the rim

(I need to find the file number for the Jefferson and the '06 Lincoln...)

I said I'd get three right and got four. I got four wrong, date and class.
Seven - 1/2 right, with either the date or the class was correct.
I didn't do too bad. It was hard and there was so many coins that look alike, I kept changing my answers. Lesson learned.

Would be interesting, and a little less intimidating to run an occasional contest with, let's say one example to guess as opposed to fourteen?

simonm
02-02-2011, 05:55 PM
Well, maybe more than one....perhaps 3 or 4. I feel like that would be a good number :)
