It is post strike damage. The mint mark has had a portion of it peeled and placed back on the mint mark at an angle.

Watcher...you're not looking for a DDO it would be an RPM=Re-Punched Mint mark and I don't see anything that suggest that.
Normally I would look for split serifs (split ends) or something on the outside of the mint mark that would suggest another part of another mint mark. Never give up...never give in!

I agree. What's going on inside the D is PMD. I do believe I see the "split" lower serif that is typical on most '79-Ds. This is the result of a damaged punch and not a re-punch.

Maybe this is why the punch was damaged... LOL... I agree to PSD... WOW I'm a poet and still don't know it... LOL!!!
