i cant match this one up to any on coppercoins i would say it #3 but the markers are not there maybe a earlier die state??
last photo is the rev between the n and e in one there are lines but not the same

Colleen, Interesting theory. The possibility of this being an 003 without the die chip in the bottom part of the 8 is interesting. Or maybe its a different die all together. No question of it being a doubled die. I realize you already know all this and I'm not much help here. Sorry.

You could have an earlier 003, but check out 008 which is similar.
I think the below is 003 EDS, but I have to double check as the file name is wrong...

no jason i dont think its #8 because my coin has a good spread on the motto and 8 does not
im think its #3 but a early die state i think

I've had more than one example of '83P DDO #3 without the die chip- I think the chip occurred somewhere fairly early in the die's life- perhaps EMDS. In my experience over the last several years selling and buying varieties, I'd guess that about 1 out of 7-10 coins is without the chip in the 8. Remember, in nearly all cases, a die doesn't start out with chips or cuds ('72 #4). They develop.

Looking at your good photos, I'd be confident enough to buy the coin you picture as die #3. Interesting and thought provoking thread, Thanks!!

Unless of course there is a new worker at the mint and the die got dropped... LOL!!!
