On the reverse of this 2001D both U's in UNUM immediately stood out as "interesting" to me. At first I was thinking possible hit of some sort but the "hits" appeared rounded to the shape of the U and exactly the same on both U's.. Then I decided to get out my dino and check under higher magnification. Using the dino I see what appears to be doubling throughout E. PLURIBUS UNUM. Does this look like true doubling?

First two photos are of the U's in UNUM

Now notice the bottom of the P and L

If this isn't doubling I'm really losing my touch! lol

I see it but it appears to be MD...flat and taken off the devices. We'll see what the others have to say as pics on the pc give me trouble sometimes

OK...it's not machine doubling, it's strike doubling :)....one of the other clues for me was the way the light reflected off the doubling...if it was on the same plane as the device, we wouldn't see that. But again, let's hope I'm wrong...mustbebob can put me in my place :LOL_Hair:

Well, there goes that idea...he must have been typing at the same time...sorry

Basically, strike doubling and machine doubling are the same thing. The act of the strike is what causes the anomaly, and since the strike is by a machine.....simply semantics here.

Sorry Bob, I was being facetious and thought TTB knew that....my mistake if it was otherwise.

For better understanding MD, I broke out my celestron (instead of the dino) and took another picture.. I circled what I am questioning.. Is this really MD?

I'm not convinced this is strictly die-shift doubling.

May sound strange, but I'd like to see an improved view of the east side of the 2nd U of UNUM.

Hmmm....I can't explain those notches....there is the possibility of MD on a DD only I can't see extra thickness on the dots..typically they will elongate when the doubling is in that area. As I always say, when in doubt, keep it.This is definitely something I can't answer...and I see you pointed it out earlier but the text was between the pics so Bob and I both missed it.Let's see if he comes back now that you've knocked me down :LOL_Hair:

I think my dino is part the blame for not capturing correctly what I see/have.. I have a new scope coming but it's not here yet so I'm trying to take pic's and make "the best of" with what I do have.. who knows.. not sure I want to toss this coin back in the junk pile yet! lol

If you guys don't mind I will take more pictures from all different angles for better examination.. to me, this coin is really different then all the other MD's I've come across.. thanks in advance for any and all help :)

Sorry Roger. I didn't realize you were being facetious. That's twice today when folks meant to be funny or meant something else, and I missed the boat. Anyway, that's not here nor there.
I did also miss the notching TTB. Is it possible that I could examine this coin?

Yes! I'd love to send it to you to examine... I am having a heck of a time trying to take pictures with the darn celestron I bought as a replacement to my dino a few months back.. it takes about 12 seconds just to try and focus one move! I'm literally viewing the forum while trying to focus the thing on the coin..

It is so hard to get the focus exactly. I sympathize with you for your efforts. At first glace I said MD but the notches made me think again. I looked at the bottom of the U and it looked imperfect. Just keep searching and never say never.

Yeah, yeah, yeah...it's always your dino, or your keyboard...never your fault; nope. :tinysmile_eyebrow_t

LOL...I don't think I would toss that one just yet. I might be a bit premature, but I'm going to say nice find.

I've talked to your hand plenty of times; it's not a good conversationalist.

I'm staying tuned for this one. Do you see anything under the loupe on UNITED if you hold the coin so that the left side of the U in UNITED is facing the light source?

tinytinkerbell

I didn't see anything on the U in UNITED... so I plugged in my wonderful dino and guess what.. yep... it froze my computer and had to reboot.. Hopefully when I send this to Bob he will be able to show what I can't..
