Hi,
I found this coin in some change I got back at the
grocery store. There is a pocket or something on the left
side of the scroll. What is the Classification ?
Yes to PMD...you can see a corresponding mark on the fields if you're talking about the flat spot. The lines may be abrasion. Also looks like MD on the intials. It helps to point out or describe exactly what you see because we all tend to focus on different areas.
On the O of ONE and to the southeast of the scroll you've got contact marks. The striations that run NE to SW are a result of a less than complete strike. These striations are on the planchet before being struck and disappear when the planchet meets the smooth surfaces of the die under great pressure. You'll also see the same striations on a coin which was struck through grease, the grease blocks the die from making contact with the planchet.
