Hello
I am new here, and have been geeking out now for 2 days spending hours and hours looking at all our change in the house and doing research on everything I found. So far loving it =)
I have been looking at pictures of Double die obverse and machine stamping... etc. but very confused as to what both are. some pictures on the net that say double die obverse but just look like there is just lots of ink around the year and/or some words. but other pictures actually look like the year and/or words were "stamped" on twice.

I have a lot of coins, from 1936 to present, a lot of the coins from 1936 - 1980's look like there is a lot of ink around the years and words and have more depth to them. And a lot is just nothing to get excited about.

Can you please help me understand how to tell what I have?

Thank you so much in advance.

I also have a 1989 d penny with a wide AM, I can't find anything on that year with the wide AM....

Up until 1992 the wide A M was used; but in 1992 mint also made a few with close A and M. With the 1992D close AM being very rare.
If you are able to take some photo's of your coins and post them (WE); but I can only speak for myself would love to see and comment.

I am new here and don't know much about coins and which ones are valuable. Here are some pictures I took. If you could give me your opinion on them I would greatly appreciate your help =)

Well I looked over the pictures but did not see anything which caught my eye. But was impressed by th picture quality; but one coin at a time might be best.

Also a note about MMs (Mint Marks)... Until 1990 the MMs were stamped into the dies by hand and that led to the Repunched MMs (RPM), OMMs (Over MMs)... Also a note about solid and plated Lincolns... Until 1983 with the exception of some 1982s the LCs were solid coins made from a mix of copper and zinc/tin then the mint switched to a copper plated zinc coin!!!

Kara, I don't know if you have been including eBay as a source for looking at pics, but I would suggest you not go there to learn (not just yet) as there are too many sellers who incorrectly described their items and it might be confusing.
Here are some links to help you learn. Bookmark them and refer back to them when you can. It will take a while to catch on, but take small steps, one at a time. And, oh, by the way...Welcome to the forum. Glad you could join us.

Karah.

Two key points, in my opinion.

(1) Get educated... which it seems you are motivated to do. You've come to the right forum... lots of very helpful and knowledgeable people here. I think one of the best places to start (for learning more) is on the HOMEPAGE of the LCR. (Link at the top of this page.)

(2) Be patient. You'll find some good stuff out there eventually. It's important not to get discouraged when you think you've found something cool, when all you have really found is one cent. In these cases, take it for the educational value that it offers... and move forward. Also, you'll hit the dry spells. It's just the "paying of dues" that we all go through.

Depending on your motivation, you're either going to be a collector (keep and catalog your finds/buys) or a treasure hunter (sell your finds. Treasure hunters rarely BUY.) If you want to sell what you find, there are people everywhere (members of this forum included) who will gladly buy your finds, depending, of course, on factors such as rarity and condition.

In any case, we are all here for one common reason: we're interested in how Lincoln Cents are minted and fascinated by errors and varieties.

I hope you have fun searching. (And by the way... Don't think you are so weird for searching through "pennies" for hours upon hours. We all do it.)

Cheers.

Tarabell Welcome to the LCR forum. We are like family here. I will agree that this is where you need to be. First of all take one step at a time. Post each coin individually both obverse and reverse. Before doing that try to learn what the varieties and errors are by reading about them on this site. Also make sure you read some of the earlier posts which will help to identify what you will need to understand some of the terms used. We are here to help you along the way. A whole new world awaits you.....and fell free to ask any questions as you start on your journey.

Karah,

Jason has some of the best articles and images out there when it comes to other forms of doubling. Here's a link:

Hey Karah a lot has been thrown your way. Take your time...one example at a time until you can grasp a little of what it is.
I would suggest the best way to learn is: Click on "Search" and type in, "For The Lincoln Cent Beginner" all by Jason Cuvelier. Some of the other members has something to share also.
Jason has everything there you need to start a lesson on, and besides he's really a teacher!
