Tough to tell from the pics. but I think it is plating blisters.

Looks to me like the mint worker scrubbed it a bit much. I would say severely abraded die.

Check the obverse before tossing, if that is what you deside to do with it. There is a significant DDO for the year.

Yes, it is abrasion covering one or more clash events. The early '80s saw a lot of clashing and abrading - the distortion sometimes get pretty wacky...

I was thinking along the lines of a grease filled clash if that's possible... That's what it looks like to me anyway... I do not really see any abrasions that would cause that much distortion in the clash... INP though!!!

Thinning of the columns (or any design element) is characteristic of die abrasion. Grease strikes don't produce thinning.
