This is my first attempt at a post so bear with me.

My father had a number of bags of cents stashed away since 1960 and I've started to look through them for mint errors. I'm starting with 1936 DDO's.

Can anyone verify that the coin shown in the attached photo is a DDO or something else (mechanical doubling?) Also, is this the appropriate forum to use for questions like this?

Thanks for the help

Gary,
Appears to be a strong example of machine doubling damage. MDD
Would be best to ask questions such as this one under attribution submissions BUT accually nothing wrong with this section .

Thanks Steve. What are the other clues I can look for to confirm this?

Thanks Steve. What are the other clues I can look for to confirm this?

The flat shelf like appearance is a good clue. This kind of strike or machine doubling can appear on just a bit of the coin or quit a bit of it. Quite offten on the dates, mint marks and liberty. I will look for a link that shows this and add it to this post in a bit.

THis link should help.....Ken Potter's Educational Series (http://koinpro.tripod.com/Articles/OtherFormsOfDoubling.htm).....

Here are two more photos of the first coin (file name contains coin 4). I've also added two photos of another coin (file name contains coin 5) which seems to have less of the "flat shelf" appearance. Any thoughts on this one?

That last picture of liberty look a lot like 2-O-V to me but I am not an expert!

I agree, the doubling on coin 5 looks like 2-O-V (FS#: 1c-015) - you can tell it isn't 1-O-IV because of the broken R in LIBERTY

Like everyone else said, coin 4 (the first coin) is probably MDD

Her are some other photos on LincolnCentResource.net (http://www.lincolncentresource.com/doubledies/1936doubledies.html) and coppercoins.com (http://www.coppercoins.com/lincoln/diestate.php?date=1936&die_id=1936p1do002&die_state=mds) of this die that you have marked as 5. DDO#2 / 1936P-1DO-002

It is the 2-O-V (FS#: 1c-015). The last 2 pictures. Nice find.
