i'm just wondering if this is an early die stage since the serif there on the bottom is so sharp?

Hi
Can you post a picture of the whole coin obverse/reverse.

I may be way off but I don't believe this is a D/S MM. I also see extra metal coming off the 4 in the pic.

Well Shannon, I was thinking the same thing..I don't see it..the one on CC seemed to be a MM where this one looks like random scratches or pieces of metal.

This is OMM#2. As to die states, I can't tell with such a limited field of view. The 4 is only flawed by the master die doubling. This one shows the notching from the master die doubling very distinctly, making it appear to have been scraped metal. The reason for the OMM appearing to be flaky metal is due to the photo alone.

What do I think. Hmmmm I would get rid of it and send it to me! I could use a Xmas present!
Outstanding ! Love the patina.

Can you go http://www.coppercoins.com/lincoln/diestate.php?date=1944&die_id=1944d1om002&die_state=mds on coppercoins and see if the die cracks below VDB are present or absent?

Yep, it does look pretty, doesn't it? I'd say it'd merit at least an MS-64 if not higher.

Must be the lighting because I have no problem seeing it in Joe's picture or on CC. I really like the full shots, nice coin !

i'm just wondering if it's an EDS or whatever since that tail on the bottom is so sharp...

That's why I was asking about the die cracks. I don't have my copy of Wexler's book, Authoritative Reference on Lincoln Cents, so I'm working with limited information. If I were to simply go by the appearance of your coin, I would call it MDS. The sharpness may be due in part to it's superior grade and strike, but die markers will show which stage it is in to see what exactly we are looking at.

You have a Stage "B" by Wexler's reference.

On the coin posted in this thread:

Obverse: EMDS
Reverse: LDS

Grade: Appears to be either AU58 or MS64BN. Cannot tell because of the lighting in the photo provided.

Definitely OMM#2 and one of the finest examples I have seen. A really great coin and worth a pretty penny. Thanks for letting me drool a little:).
