If that one is a 1996P it is more than likely a 1996P 1DER-005T. A nice find for a trail die. I have sent several coins to Mr. Neff over the past year or so for his attribution as trail dies or wavysteps. He has done extensive study with these dies and has compiled an outstanding collection as the page David posted attests wihth some great photos.

I read most of the site. I still don't understand what causes the trails. I know that it is the result of the squeezing process, but why?

What year is the coin Shingpumps?

Shingpumps,
BJ Neff lists two similar 1998P dies. 1998P 1DER-026T and 1998P 1DER-028T.
You may want to look at them for die marker comparisons to see what you have . You may have one for that year that has not been listed as yet. Sure looks like my 96 though.

It looks like: 1994P-1DER-023T Yours may be an early die state

Here is the pic from the site:

I will agree, it does look like you have 1994P-1DER-023T this is one of the stronger trail dies.

To answer Brad's question; there is a theory on how trails and wavy steps are formed and it will be coming out in ERRORSCOPE fairly soon and after that, it will be in the wavy step trail files, new for this coming year with added entries. I would like to add that due to the way these anomalies are formed and when they are formed, it will constitute a new type die variety. Also, contrary to some beliefs, these are not doubled dies, however, they are design element extensions, which defer from design element duplication (doubled dies).

Pretty much don't. Found everything I have from rolls. Alot of time spent on pennies. My girl hates it, until I find a 99' wide or a 92' close.
