    1964d-1mm-025 contest

This will be an easy and quick one. I found a few of these tonight, and instead of saying, "the first person to pm me gets one", I thought we could at least learn something.

The coin will go to the first person to correctly answer the question. Please just post your answer here in this thread. One coin will be awarded, and the contest obviously ends when the correct answer is posted.

    The question-

What is the one thing that we can't know for certain on Lincoln Cents dated 1964?

    Enjoy,

    Jody

Closed! Roger wins. Coop gets one for laugh value. Send me your addresses and I'll get them out.

The answer I was looking for was that you couldn't know for sure the year they were minted. Due to a severe coin shortage in the 1960's, Congress passed legislation freezing the 1964 dates on all coins produced until further notice. It was erroneously believed that the shortage was caused by collectors hoarding coins, and it was believed that this would alleviate the problem. Cents with the 1965 date were ordered on December 29th, 1965, and no more cents with 1964 were struck.

p.s. I forgot to word the question to say 1964-D cents, therefor Roger is correct about cents with no mint mark dated 1964, in that we can't be certain which mint they were produced in, since San Fran was also striking cents without mint marks.

          New to the site

Brad, thanks for the welcome. I am exploring the site after years of on and off Lincoln collecting. I am presently interested in learning more about error coins. Looking forward to the conversation.
