I'm happy to have found this (first '72 for me) because now I can stop hoarding the 72D's. I don't think I would have missed this if I had seen it before under the scope. I did almost miss it with a 5X loupe and dug it back out of the copper pile after initially tossing it. Too bad about the damage but it was a good learning experience.
1972D, DDO, finally found one

Nice find, they are hard to find. The other thing to watch out for on 1972-D's are rotated reverses. I did not now this until reading version three of Potter's "Striking it rich through pocket change."
Congrats - check coppercoins for the die number.Roger

72-D has got some really fun doubled dies, great find. These are actually very, very scarce in full red BU.Chris & Charity Welch- LIVEANDIEVARIETIES

That's an excellent find for way down in Florida! I am fortunate to have a ton of '72-D's to check in my area so my find rates are pretty good. I have found several examples of DDO's 1-4, but am still lacking #5. Die #3 can be a really tough find, even though the doubling is subtle enough to easily overlook. Based on that, you would think that there would be more die #3's left out there, but I don't see this being the case. I always key in on the "We" of In God We Trust to find these as the best separation always seems to occur there (at least for dies 1-4). Die's #3 and #5 appear to be the most rare in my experience, but die #1 is my favorite. Nice work!Comment

These are just snapshots through the scope, Mike. I use a controllable ring light and dim to the desired level. I can also turn on or off any of four quadrants on the light. Don't remember if I used that feature on these shots.Comment
