When a piece of either die (obverse or reverse) breaks off along the rim, a cud on the rim of the coin is formed on the planchet when struck. Cuds only happen at the rim!

That bears a striking resemblance to the LC-73D-5 on page 81 of The Cud Book. The coin has a nice cherry chocolate color to it. Very cool find.
