Trying to shoot through slabs, show nice details of the coin AND details about the variety is not an easy combination. Something is sacrificed. If the coin is not level within the container, you have to shim the slab to level out the coin. 1941 DDO-001; 1968-S DDO-005; 1943 DDO-001; & 1971-S DDO-001.

The plastic does pose a problem. But with what you are trying to do, they look very nice.

Usually lighting is a lot more difficult with slabs than with raw coins, but in reality there are just fewer options so you get forced into a particular arrangement which can actually be used for both. I got frustrated one day with not being able to take good slab photos and ended up building the "smile directors" that I now use for everything, raw and slabbed, in order to get similar quality from both formats. In reality, they just mimic short sections of ringlights but that seems to give an optimum lighting configuration for "near-axial" lighting...Ray

I took something like 30 shots of that '41. I finally got a few through a circular polarizing filter that eliminated the last bit of glare. The other slabs were not as tough. I will keep experimenting. Thanks for the replies.
