While feeding my addiction I came across this. There appears to be an "S" coming off the tail of the 9. It does not resemble the die breaks associated with the 1952 D. Very interesting indeed.

It's a die break. In the 50's it was not uncommon to see them roping off from the tail of the 9 towards the mint mark, or all the way to the mint mark. I think the circulated condition makes it harder to distinguish, but I've seen a lot of these.

I agree, it has the characteristics of a die crack coming from the tail. It is interesting still.

I had a few examples of this very coin, and sent them to John Bordner and John Wexler for examination. Although it looks like an S, as the die progresses, the anomaly turns to a no doubt die crack. It is still a nice conversation piece.

It is weird how it looks almost just like the mint mark.

Nice coin to talk about. I have several cents that are nothing more than conversation pieces, which is just fine with me. Good find.
